Sorority and Fraternity Life is raising funds to send student leaders to the Association for Fraternal Leadership and Values (AFLV) national conference, which takes place every February in Indiana or California. This conference provides students with an opportunity to engage with Greek Life on a national scale, gaining valuable skills in leadership, recruitment, risk management, mental health, and more. Attendees return to USD with new knowledge and skills to strengthen their chapters and the community.
Since 2023, Chapter Presidents have had the opportunity to attend the AFLV conference, but they have been required to partially fund the experience themselves, limiting access for chapters with fewer financial resources. Our goal is to raise funds to send all 11 Chapter Presidents to AFLV in 2026, with no cost to their chapters!
Supporting our initiative has many benefits for the Greek and USD community! Students who attend AFLV build relationships that foster Greek Unity and trust between student leaders and advisors. These connections result in collaborations such as social events, philanthropy initiatives, and mentorships that might not otherwise happen. These relationships extend throughout the presidents' terms and provide support for problem-solving, recruitment, and other community-building programming.
Leadership skills gained at AFLV also benefit other student organizations across campus. Many Greek members hold positions on executive boards of groups like the Student Government Association, Dakotathon, AWOL, and many more. The leadership training from AFLV enhances their contributions to these organizations as well.
Additionally, AFLV prioritizes risk management education, which is crucial for maintaining a safe, healthy campus environment. By equipping student leaders with tools to address issues like hazing, sexual assault, and substance abuse, the conference empowers them to promote a positive experience for the entire USD community.
